Castelo Dos Mouros (The moorish castle) dominates the Alentajoan town of Mertola.

This beautiful town is only 40 minutes or so drive from the eastern algarve and is well worth a visit but don’t go on a Monday as everything is shut.

Often when we are in another country we miss the little things.

Street signs for instance……………………don’t you think this is so much nicer than the ones we use in Britain.

Look out for street signs while you are in Portugal they can be inspiring.

There are many beautiful places to be found inland in the algarve.

Pego do Inferno is one of them. I understand that it is called “the palce of hell” because the water is deep with treacherous caves where a number of people have drowned but don’t quote me on that as I have done little research to verify it.

Anyway it certainly doesn’t look very hellish.

Food is everything in Portugal.

 No matter how hard up a Portuguese family is they will ensure a good meal on the table.

Portions are generous and every meal is an event to be savoured and lingered over.
